One of only a dozen with original Vanden Plas coachwork, extensively documented and beautifully maintained

Launched in September 1930, the low chassis Invicta S-Type was among the most desirable British sports cars of the vintage era. Capable of 100mph, it combined remarkable performance with elegant styling — the sweeping external exhaust pipes and low-slung stance epitomising what has often been described as “traditional British sports car design at its best.” At its heart lay the 4½-litre six-cylinder engine built specially for Invicta by Meadows of Wolverhampton.

Delivered new in March 1931, this particular car is one of only around twelve examples of the 77 built to be fitted with original Vanden Plas coachwork. Its history is exceptionally well documented, including over sixty years in the long-term ownership of George Milligen, accompanied by two extensive files of papers, receipts and correspondence dating back decades.

Purchased by the current vendor in 2016, the car subsequently underwent a comprehensive mechanical rebuild. This included the installation of a new differential ratio paired with a custom close-ratio gearbox for improved usability, a fully overhauled engine with new counterweighted crankshaft, steel rods and forged pistons, together with a complete rewire and rebuild of all electrical components. Crucially, all major mechanical components remain original to this car.

Regularly driven and maintained by Setford & Company, the Invicta has been enjoyed on numerous continental tours in recent years and continues to present with the perfect patina of a car well used and carefully preserved. Rare, beautifully prepared and boasting impeccable provenance, this Low Chassis S-Type represents one of the finest examples available today — ready for its next adventure.
