1960 LOTUS 18 WOLMAN BORGWARD L4
Chassis No.911 | The Borgward twin-cam engine developed by Bill Wolman.
An exceptionally rare and historically significant 1960 Lotus 18, chassis #911 — a genuine example of Colin Chapman’s ground-breaking first mid-engine Grand Prix design, uniquely associated with the Borgward engine conversion pioneered by Bill Wolman.
Introduced for the 1960 Formula One season, the Lotus 18 marked a decisive shift in Grand Prix engineering. Conceived by Chapman as a lightweight and uncompromisingly functional machine, the Type 18 established the mid-engine layout as the definitive architecture for top-level single-seater racing. Its first Grand Prix victory came in the hands of Sir Stirling Moss at Monaco in 1960, driving for Rob Walker Racing, before Innes Ireland secured the first works victory for Team Lotus. The model’s effectiveness saw it adapted successfully for Formula 2 and Formula Junior competition, confirming its importance in the evolution of modern racing car design.
Chassis #911 represents a particularly fascinating chapter in the model’s history through its period Borgward twin-cam, four-cylinder installation. Developed and championed by respected engineer Bill Wolman, the 1.5-litre twin-cam Borgward unit was admired for its robust construction and high-revving efficiency, offering a competitive alternative to the Coventry Climax engines of the era. Borgward-engined Lotus 18s were produced in very limited numbers and are documented in period racing literature, making this car a rare and highly interesting blend of British chassis innovation and German engineering.
